Ranolf St - Temporary Road Closure
A temporary closure will be in place on Ranolf Street, between the Pukuatua Street and Arawa Street roundabouts, from 7:00am on 22 June to 28 June (weather dependent). This closure is required to safely complete the final stage of the Ranolf Street watermain upgrade.
Overview
Rotorua Lakes Council is upgrading the watermain along Ranolf Street. The existing pipe has reached the end of its service life and will be replaced in stages from Malfroy Road to Arawa Street.
Upgrading the watermain along Ranolf Street is a key investment in Rotorua’s essential infrastructure.
The upgraded pipe will increase resilience in the water network and replacing it now helps prevent unexpected failures, leaks, and service disruptions.

- Start date: September 1, 2025.
- Estimated completion: Mid-2026 (weather and site conditions permitting)
Stages of work
The upgrade will be delivered in four stages:
- Stage 1: Malfroy Road to Pererika Street (Completed)
- Stage 2: Pererika Street to Eruera Street (Completed)
- Stage 3: Eruera Street to Pukuatua Street (Completed)
- Stage 4: Pukuatua Street to Arawa Street (Underway)
Scope of work
- Site investigations to determine pipe alignment.
- Installation using directional drilling and trenching.
- Fitting valves, hydrants, and other components.
- Connecting to the existing network.
- Decommissioning the old pipe.
- Restoring berms, footpaths, and affected area.

Traffic and access impacts
We’re working hard to minimise disruption during the upgrade, but some temporary impacts are expected as work progresses through each stage.
Traffic Management
- Temporary lane closures and reduced speed zones may be in place during active work periods.
- Traffic management plans will be used to keep vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians safe.
- Detours will be clearly signposted where needed.
Property Access
- Access to homes and businesses will be maintained as much as possible.
- If short-term access restrictions are required, our team will notify you in advance and work with you to minimise inconvenience.
Pedestrian Access
- Footpaths may be temporarily closed or diverted.
- Please place your rubbish/recycling collections out as usual. Contractors will move them as needed.
- Safe alternative routes will be provided, including for people with mobility needs.
Parking
- On-street parking may be temporarily unavailable in active work zones.
- Please follow signage and instructions from traffic management staff

Why is this work being done?

When will the work start and finish?
Stage 1 is scheduled to begin in Aug 2025 with each stage progressing sequentially. The full project is expected to be completed by mid-2026, weather permitting.
Will there be road closures or traffic delays?
Yes, there may be temporary traffic management in place during each stage. Detours and signage will be clearly marked to help guide drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
Will my water be turned off?
