Rotorua Lakes Council is undertaking two major infrastructure upgrades to improve the resilience of essential water and wastewater services.
Council is replacing its Parawai Rising Main, the main 3.8km pipeline that carries about 1350 m3 of wastewater per day from Ngongotaha through the Parawai Road to Rotorua city’s network and is upgrading the watermain along Ranolf Street, between Malfroy Road and Arawa Street.
The projects are part of the council’s critical infrastructure renewals programme to ensure the safety and reliability of water and wastewater services, reduce the risk of environmental and service disruption and enable future growth and development.
Both projects will be undertaken in stages to minimise disruption to the community as far as is possible.
Sections of the Ngongotahā cycleway will need to be closed between August and November this year for the wastewater rising main replacement, which is underway and being undertaken by TRILITY.
The pipeline serves homes and businesses in Hamurana and Ngongotahā and is the third-largest pressure sewer main in Rotorua.
To minimise disruption, the new pipeline is being installed alongside the existing one. However, staged cycleway closures will be necessary for safety reasons. Clearly marked detours will be in place throughout construction.
The staged closures of the cycleway are as follows -
- Stage 1: Frank St → Kawaha Point Rd
4 Aug – 1 Sep 2025 - Stage 2: Parawai → Frank St
11 Aug – 1 Sep 2025 - Stage 3: Parawai → Kawaha Point Rd
1 Sep – 30 Nov 2025
Once complete, the old pipe will be safely decommissioned but will be retained in place to add extra resiliency in the future.
