High pathogenicity avian influenza - H5 Bird Flu (H5N1)
Also known as bird flu, H5N1 avian influenza is a viral disease affecting domestic and wild birds globally. It can also spill over to mammals.
NZ is at risk of H5N1 introduction by both migratory birds and through our borders. H5N1 avian influenza viruses cause high mortality in poultry and waterfowl with domestic species likely being the most affected.
Reporting potential bird flu cases:
If you see three or more sick/dead wild birds in a group, avoid contact, record what you see and report it by calling 0800 80 99 66. You can also report online at report.mpi.govt.nz
Early detection and protecting birds against H5N1 are the best ways to reduce the risk. Read more on MPI's website.
