The Sir Howard Morrison Centre, situated on land gifted by Ngāti Whakaue, is an iconic performing arts venue in the heart of Rotorua.
It stands as a cultural hub, where community, culture, and creativity converge offering high-quality events while providing a platform and pathway for local talent and artists. The Centre’s rich legacy, combined with modern facilities, positions it as a destination for residents and tourists alike to experience the dynamic arts scene in Rotorua.
An architecturally stunning blend of original Stripped Classical and Spanish Mission design combined with contemporary elements, the Centre is undoubtedly a diverse and elegant venue.
The original Municipal Building (1938) served as the civic centre and was converted into a convention centre in 1995. It became a performing arts venue in 2014, then closed to the public in 2017 for earthquake strengthening and refurbishing.
Officially re-opened in February 2023, the building is an asset for the local Rotorua community and New Zealand’s performing arts industry.
