Infrastructure and Environment Committee meeting preview
Elected members will consider recommended changes to Rotorua Lakes Council’s draft Speed Management Plan next week following community consultation.
A total of 1718 submissions were received during the consultation period, which ran from 17 July to 18 August and included 1632 completed surveys, 44 hard copy submissions, 42 email submissions and more than 400 comments on Council’s Facebook page.
A comprehensive report for next Wednesday’s [1 November 2023] Infrastructure and Environment Committee meeting provides an overview of key issues identified in submissions and recommends a more gradual and phased approach be undertaken with the initial focus to be on schools and the CBD.
A territorial authority may choose to create and engage with its community on, its own speed management plan ahead of participating in the compulsory regional speed management plan process. Rotorua Lakes Council took this approach to inform Council decision-making.
The Committee will be asked to receive the deliberations report for the speed management plan, note the community feedback and accept the recommended approach to create a final draft plan, and authorise council officers to prepare and submit a final draft plan to the Director of Land Transport for certification.
