I am getting in touch with regard to the upcoming deadline for council amalgamation.

I am working on a piece for Saturday this week which will include comment from every region in the country on what their plans are to take to the Government.

I wanted to get a statement answering the following:

- What proposal isBOP taking to the Government as part of the headstart process?

- can I just get some comment from the mayor about how the process has been for councils to get to this point?

Mayor Tapsell provided the following comment:

“This is a once in a generation opportunity to change boundaries and strengthen how Councils deliver services locally and regionally.

“I'm proud of the way that Bay of Plenty has worked under tight timeframes, with the principle of ensuring the best outcomes possible for us all.

“This process has strained relationships elsewhere at times, but here we've worked collaboratively and also partnered with Te Arawa Iwi Chairs, and Lakes and Rural Community Board Chairs to help us design the proposal to be put forward.

“There is much detail to work through, but if the proposal is accepted then there will be further analysis and formal consultation to help shape the best possible outcome for our communities.”

I am emailing to ask if we could put in a request to interview Rotorua Mayor Tania Tapsell regarding the council's current decision not to merge with other councils at this time?

I think it would be a valuable opportunity to hear directly from the Mayor about the reasons behind the decision, what it means for Rotorua, and the potential implications for the region moving forward.

*During interview reporter also asked the mayor for comment relating to a planned iwi housing development

The Mayor was interviewed today
