30 Sept 2026: Proposal to move disc golf to Centennial Park
Media: Local Democracy Reporter
Topic: Rotorua Disc Golf Club proposal to move to Centennial Park
Enquiry
I'm working on a story about the proposed disc golf course at Centennial Park. I appreciate there is already a lot of information about this on the consultation page, so I've tried to avoid asking questions which make you repeat something already publicly available.
Questions below.
- How many submissions has the consultation received so far, and has feedback generally been supportive, opposed or mixed?
- What are the main concerns council has heard from submitters to date?
- What discussions has council had with the Mokoia Pony Club and other existing users of the reserve, and what feedback have they provided?
- What feedback has council received regarding memorial trees and the reserve's memorial character?
- To what extent is the proposal linked to uncertainty around the future of the existing disc golf course at Scion's tree archive area?
- If approved, would the Centennial Park course be intended to supplement the existing Scion course or eventually replace it?
- What would you say to residents concerned a disc golf course could change the character of Centennial Park?
Response
We provided the following information:
Rotorua Lakes Council was approached by Rotorua Lakes Disc Golf Club regarding a proposal to move disc golf activities to Centennial Park. Council sees value in supporting healthy recreational activities in public spaces, but it was important the community had an opportunity to provide input. To enable this, we have facilitated community engagement through the survey.
We have received 306 contributions so far and feedback to date has been mixed. As consultation is still open, we do not want to pre-empt the final results. A more detailed analysis of the feedback will be available once the consultation period has closed.
Council facilitated discussions between the Mokoia Pony Club and the Rotorua Lakes Disc Golf Club. We recommend contacting the clubs directly if you would like further detail on those conversations and the feedback they provided.
Note to reporter: Rotorua Lakes Disc Golf Club is best placed to answer your last three questions directly.
