7 Sept 2026: Regional Tourism Boost funding for Rotorua
Media: Local Democracy Reporter
Topic: Regional Tourism Boost funding for Rotorua and its destination partners
Enquiry
I'm working on a story about the Government's latest Regional Tourism Boost funding announcement [see above from tourism minister], which includes two successful bids involving Rotorua.
I was hoping to get [Mayor Tania Tapsell's] reaction and comments on the following:
- What does this funding mean for Rotorua?
- Why do you think Rotorua was successful in securing Government backing for these campaigns?
- The Government says it wants more international visitors travelling during the shoulder season and beyond the main tourism gateways. How well placed is Rotorua to benefit from that strategy?
What would success look like for Rotorua by the time these campaigns conclude in 2027?
Response
From Mayor Tania Tapsell:
1. What does this funding mean for Rotorua?
We're so grateful for this announcement as it means we'll see investment into boosting regional hospitality, which when included with tourism is a top provider of jobs in Rotorua.
It also recognises the strength of Rotorua as a top destination with exceptional food offerings, as the importance and value of growing our visitor economy by supporting regions across New Zealand.
2. Why do you think Rotorua was successful in securing Government backing for these campaigns?
I believe our success comes down to the high-quality and much-loved experiences on offer for visitors, and well as our strong track record of delivering successful destination marketing initiatives.
3. The Government says it wants more international visitors travelling during the shoulder season and beyond the main tourism gateways. How well placed is Rotorua to benefit from that strategy?
We have a unique year-round offering that appeals to a wide range of international travellers. Whether it's our geothermal attractions, Māori cultural experiences, wellness products, outdoor adventures, events, food scene or accommodation options, Rotorua has something for everyone in any season.
Our central location to easily drive, and the ability to fly direct to Christchurch or Auckland makes usan ideal base for visitors wanting to explore our neighbouring regions. This makes us well placed to support the Government's goal of encouraging visitors to stay longer and travel further.
4. What would success look like for Rotorua by the time these campaigns conclude in 2027?
It's been such a tough time for our hospitality and food sector, so we're very thankful for this funding and support.
Success would look like more international visitors choosing Rotorua, staying longer, spending more with local businesses, and travelling during shoulder seasons where there's room for growth.
We've already been focused key international markets such as China, Australia and North America so this will be a great boost to ensure some of the highest spending international visitors put Rotorua on their travel plans.
