Community and District Development Committee meeting updates
This week's Community and District Development Committee meeting focused on economic growth opportunities through investment in events and the commercialisation of Sir Howard Morrison Centre (SHMC).
SvG Limited Director Sharon van Gulik presented a review of the Rotorua Events Strategy that was developed in 2021. The Strategy sets out key objectives and opportunities to leverage the district’s unique offerings, and provides direction for future investment to deliver quality events that help to build the Rotorua brand. Elected Members approved the new Rotorua Events Strategy.
A second report was presented to the Committee on the performance of Rotorua venues and possible commercialisation options for SHMC. Elected Members noted the commercialisation options, instructed the Chief Executive to report back to Council in the New Year on a delivery plan, and further resolved to introduce a SHMC Yield Policy which prioritises a booking system three months out for shows that have a higher yield over community shows.
The decision to investigate the commercialisation of SHMC was part of Council’s Annual Plan consultation process earlier this year. Council resolved to take a more commercial approach to the Centre’s operating model with the aim of improving return on investment and alignment to council’s event strategy outcomes.
