The successful candidates for the Tuia 2023 leadership programme have been confirmed.
“I’m really proud to announce Amelia Liddell and Sa’hayla Harden as the successful candidates to be a part of the 2023 Tuia leadership programme, says Rotorua Mayor Tania Tapsell.
Tuia is a national leadership programme for young Māori in communities throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. The programme involves local Mayors selecting rangatahi (youth) Māori from their district to mentor on a one-to-one basis, to encourage and enhance leadership skills.
Founded in 2011 through the Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ), the Tuia programme has supported over 550 rangatahi. Rotorua Lakes Council has been part of the programme since its inception and has mentored 12 rangatahi Māori.
The successful candidates are expected to undertake a 100 hour community service project which will provide an opportunity to share experiences, practice new strategies and demonstrate leadership.
Mayor Tapsell says the Rotorua Lakes Council received a number of strong applications to be a part of the 2023 Tuia Leadership programme.
“We had an incredible range of applicants come through. I am confident that Amelia and Sa’hayla will seize the opportunities available through the programme, enabling them to contribute back to our community.
Amelia and Sa’hayla will meet regularly with Mayor Tania Tapsell, participate in local civic events, grow their networks and connect with a diverse range of people to gain a deeper insight into inter-generational issues, cultural values and experiences.
Mayor Tapsell, says the programme enables rangatahi to gain leadership skills, build networks and give back to the community of Rotorua.
“Amelia and Sa’hayla have both demonstrated that they’re already actively contributing to the wellbeing of their community and are willing to commit to this kaupapa for a minimum of 12 months – I’m looking forward to watching them develop in this role, becoming the next generation of leaders.”
The Mayor, in partnership with the community and a past Tuia recipient, selected the candidates that best matches the programme criteria.
Commitments include attending five weekend wānanga held on marae with fellow Tuia representatives from around the country, monthly mentoring sessions with the Mayor and other event and networking opportunities.
