Summer safety tips
We’re looking forward to a bustling summer with plenty of people making the most of all our district has to offer.
The inner city will be extra busy during the next few weeks and we’ve got safety covered.
Here are a few tips to keep you and your whānau safe, whether you’re out and about or hanging at home.
Safe City Guardians and CCTV
Rotorua Lakes Council’s Safe City Guardians will be out doing their normal daily patrols every day except Christmas day. The Guardians are supported by Police, VR Security and Māori Wardens and the CCTV team, providing live updates about what’s happening around town.
If you need assistance here are the best ways to get help:
- For Rotorua Lakes Council services phone 07 348 4199.
- For the Safe City Guardians phone Rotorua Lakes Council on 07 348 4199.
- In the event of a life-threatening emergency phone 111.
- To report a crime that has already happened call 105 or use the online form, or visit the Rotorua Police Station on Fenton Street.
Keeping your home safe
There’s plenty to remember during the holidays season, especially if you’re heading away. Here are a few tips to keep your home safe:
- Check all doors and windows to make sure they’re locked.
- Notify a trusted friend or neighbour so they can keep an eye on your house and collect your mail.
- Create an illusion that you’re home – leave lights on or get timers for lights. Park a car in the drive way.
- Keep valuables out of site or locked away.
- If you’re hiding your spare key make sure you find a good place – under the pot or mat is not a good hiding spot.
- Consider investing in security cameras.
- Put bikes and other toys away at the end of each day.
Safety around the home
- Always empty bathtubs, buckets and paddling pools after use and store them away.
- Check that pool gates are secure and locked at all times.
- Only let children play in, on and around water when you are there to supervise them.
- Check driveways and around vehicles before you exit your property.
- Be BBQ safe – keep plenty of clear space around your BBQ and watch little people who may be around while cooking.
- Switch off fairy lights before you head to bed.
