Committee meetings next week
The Infrastructure and Environment Committee will receive an update on recent community feedback and actions relating to the Tarawera Sewerage Scheme when it meets next Tuesday [12 December].
The committee will be asked to agree to give effect to its resolution of 6 September 2023 – when it agreed to proceed to entering into a contract with a preferred provider – and to proceed towards concluding a contract with the preferred tenderer for Stage 2 of the reticulation scheme.
In September the Committee also directed staff to undertake further engagement with the Tarawera community to update property owners and seek feedback on the level of support for self-installation of apparatus on private properties with nominated service providers and subject to compliance conditions. It was agreed that if there was not majority support for this, it would not be agreed to.
A letter was sent to property owners with an update and requesting feedback. The feedback received is outlined in a report to the Committee.
Setting of a targeted rate for the scheme will be deliberated by Council in the future, a report to the committee notes.
It also notes that the local community is seeking certainty on the implementation of the scheme and that protracted delays would potentially cause cost escalation.

The Committee will also receive a petition relating to the Tarawera Sewerage Scheme.
Also on the agenda for next Tuesday’s meeting is a verbal general update on Te Whare Taonga o Te Arawa – Rotorua Museum and a report seeking approval to appoint Councillor Gregg Brown, as an additional observer on the museum building governance group.
