Shaping a city is proud work
Simon says the diversity and scale of the work available in Rotorua is what makes it such a special place to work as a Planner.
“Rotorua has experienced significant growth in recent years which has created a unique set of planning challenges. These challenges have created a variety of opportunities for Rotorua Planners.
“We have a newly adopted Future Development Strategy, adoption of the Medium Density Residential Standards (MDRS), intensification plan change that is leading our response to our housing shortage and a tourism sector that continues to push the boundaries. We are currently working with developers and land owners on more than 53 large residential development opportunities (20 houses or more) including anything from inner city residential developments to large rural papakāinga development.
“There is a big focus on revitalisation of the Rotorua CBD and our tourism sector is also well and truly back up and running with a bunch of new and exciting tourism based projects.”
With such a busy workload Rotorua Lakes Council is always on the lookout for new Planners to join the team. We want to hear from passionate, enthusiastic Planners who want to be part of making Rotorua a great place to live, work and play.
“I get a huge sense of enjoyment out of working on behalf of the community. I am a proud local person, so being able to make a difference to a place that I care about so deeply is super satisfying,” says Simon.
“I’ve worked in many other parts of New Zealand, but for me it’s simple, there are no other parts of the country that have quite the same balance between work opportunities and the outdoors like Rotorua does. You can be in the bush mountain biking or out paddling on the lakes while most of the country sits in traffic!"
