In the interest of public safety, Rotorua Lakes Council has cordoned off a building at Te Ngae Recycling Centre while an independent expert assesses the risk of potential asbestos contamination.
This issue came to light during a routine inspection today (3 November) of the building in preparation for potential alterations.
As a precautionary measure, access to the building has been restricted, and detailed inspections are scheduled to commence on Monday. The public can still drop off recycling but will need to be mindful of the cordoned-off area. Due to the safety precautions, household recycling will be taken to the Rotorua Atiamuri Waste landfill for today and from Monday, 6 November all materials will be transported to the Kopu Material Recovery Centre, near Thames. Your co-operation during this period is greatly appreciated.
Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding and support as we prioritise safety and environmental responsibility. For further updates or inquiries, please contact Rotorua Lakes Council on (07) 348 4199. Your safety and well-being remain our top priority.
The cordoning off of the Centre should not impact on any of the surrounding businesses in the area.
