Community & District Development Committee meeting preview
Next week elected members will consider a recommendation to investigate leasing pensioner housing stock to a community housing provider.
Council owns and maintains 152 pensioner units across five locations in Rotorua. The decision to explore options for future management is in response to direction from elected members to look at how the pensioner housing portfolio could be improved to get the best outcomes for tenants, including changes to eligibility criteria and increasing investment over year one and two of the Long-term Plan to complete refurbishment of vacant units.
The proposed recommendations look to achieve the following objectives:
- Ensure ongoing housing security for existing tenants.
- Provide greater support services for vulnerable tenants.
- Ensure that the portfolio is financially sustainable.
- Create opportunities for growth in the portfolio in the future.
If approved, the proposed preferred option for pensioner housing services will form part of the upcoming Long-term Plan consultation process, expected to take place in April 2024. Council will also engage with tenants to ensure their views are heard.
