Uplift for Eastside community space
'Kōauau' is also the name for a flute-like instrument, traditionally made of wood. Most have three finger holes, that when played by an expert gives off a sweet, soft and somewhat eerie sound.
Such an expert was the legendary Tutanekai playing for his beautiful wahine Hinemoa. According to the history, on a clear silent moonlit night from the shores of Ōwhata, listen for "Te tangi o te Kōauau a Tutanekai mo tona kou Hinemoa - listen to the sound of the kōauau of Tutanekai playing for his beloved Hinemoa."
The upgrades at Kōauau/Scott Avenue Reserve are part of Council’s annual renewal programme which funds the replacement of playgrounds across the district each year. Playgrounds are assessed and graded, taking into consideration the condition of play equipment and suitability for the community using it.
Council works with local schools, residents and community groups to ensure each playground reflects the needs of the neighbourhood and provides accessible spaces for the community to enjoy.
