Council meeting next week
Elected members will next week decide on the electoral system – first past the post (FPP) or single transferable vote (STV) – to be applied to the 2025 and 2028 local elections in Rotorua.
The matter will be considered at next Tuesday’s Council meeting.
The Local Electoral Act 2001 allows councils to make a decision on the electoral system they prefer two years before the next local election or to hold a binding poll on the matter. Any such decision covers two elections, and any associated by-elections, and also applies to election of community board members.
A change of electoral system can be achieved either by way of a local authority resolution or as the outcome of a poll of electors and a poll may either be demanded by electors or be the result of a local authority resolution to hold one.
Any decision to change the electoral system for the 2025 and 2028 local elections or hold a poll must be made no later than 12 September 2023.
As part of this matter, Council will also need to consider the order of candidate names, that is, whether they will be in alphabetical order, pseudo-random order or random order on voting papers.
