Seeking community representative for Waikawau Committee
The expectations of committee members are to:
- Lead implementation of the Waikawau/Hannahs Bay Reserve Management Plan including making recommendations on the priority of actions to be undertaken;
- Consider and make recommendations in response to requests from the community to undertake activity on the reserve, in line with the principles and policies contained in the Waikawau/Hannahs Bay Reserve Management Plan;
- Advocate in the best interests of the community with regards to the ongoing use, management and development of the Waikawau/Hannahs Bay Reserve.
Since 2021 the committee has helped implement some of the actions identified in the reserve’s Management Plan. These actions include engagement with the community around the future vision for the reserve, beginning the significant wetland restoration project and assisting with the development of the landscape concept plan that was shared with the community in 2022.
The committee meets monthly to discuss projects and make decisions about the reserve management.
Community representative applicants can live outside of the Eastside area but must have an established and ongoing association with the reserve, the eastern suburbs of Rotorua and its communities.
Rotorua Lakes Council will receive and collate applications on behalf of the reserve committee, which will then make the final decision on who is selected as the new community representative.
