Infrastructure & Environment Committee to consider museum consultation
Approval will be sought on Wednesday from Council’s Infrastructure and Environment Committee to consult the community on options for strengthening and restoration of Rotorua’s museum.
A report to the committee notes that prior to COVID-19 it was expected the project could be completed within the approved $53m envelope (Council contribution of $15m and $38m in external funding) without the need for additional council funding.
Following extensive research, detailed design, ground investigations and other work, the total project is now estimated to cost $81.4m with the potential for costs to escalate further given the complexity and age of the building.
A report to the committee outlines four options recommended for consultation and the cost and implications of each. The four options are:
- Restore the building and re-open as a museum;
- Stage the project;
- Postpone the project (building would remain closed);
- Investigate alternative seismic strengthening.
The Committee will consider a recommendation that staff be directed to undertake community consultation on the four options to understand the community’s level of commitment to the project and the level of support for any additional funding.
Council would make a decision on which option to pursue following consultation.
