Waka Kotahi update - Bay of Plenty SH works for October and November
Waikato and Bay of Plenty state highway works for October and November
Following the Labour Weekend holiday period crews are back working across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty state highway network.
However, the recent fine weather is not predicted to continue, and road users should be aware that road conditions can change at any time, whether due to roadworks or weather.
The volume of roadworks across the network will increase between now and Christmas, as contractors look to progress their programmes before the next holiday period, says Roger Brady, Bay of Plenty System Manager at Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
“The next eight weeks will see a significant amount of work completed throughout the region. Road users can expect disruption and longer journey times; however, contractors will minimise this where possible using detour routes, or by working at night when traffic volumes are reduced.
“The immediate forecast indicates a mostly wet week ahead. As such road users will need to be prepared for wet weather conditions, potentially at short notice. Driving to the conditions of the road is important to ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.
“The weather may also impact where crews undertake work on a given day, as they will head to areas that are dry and ready for sealing. As always, we recommend road users check the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner (www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz) before travelling, as this provides real-time updates on the network,” says Mr Brady.
In total Waka Kotahi is undertaking a programme of over 700 lane kilometres of road resealing and rebuilding across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region, to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2023.
Rotorua work:
- SH5 Tarukenga: Chipsealing commences east of Rotorua on Monday 31 October, between the hours of 7am and 7pm. Where works are taking place stop/go traffic management and a reduced speed limit will be in place.
- SH30 Eastern Corridor Stage Two: Multiple worksites are active between Iles Road and Puketāwhero Park to excavate the shared service trench for the relocation of underground services and installation of the new watermain. Temporary traffic management will be in place with no left turn lane out of Basley Road to SH30/Te Ngae Road, and no left turn from the SH30/Te Ngae Road westbound lane into Tennyson Drive; minor delays are expected. The upgraded footpath on the lakeside between Iles Road to Tennyson Drive, heading east on SH30/Te Ngae Road, is now open. Works continue in the area and pedestrians are asked to take care. Minor delays are expected. More information.
- SH30/SH33 Te Ngae Junction: Construction of the safety improvements continue with excavation, stabilising and pavement work underway on the western side, with a shoulder closure in place. At times there will be minor traffic delays, and people are asked to take extra care while travelling through the site. More information.
- SH33 Te Ngae Junction to Paengaroa: Safety improvement upgrade work continues near Pareteiro - Sun Valley Curves passing lane. Temporary traffic management is in place with a contra flow or stop/go and a temporary speed limit of 30km/h during work hours. When the site is unattended, the worksite will have a shoulder closure and a temporary speed limit of 50km/h. There are also ongoing shared path work between Mourea Bridge and Ōkere Falls. Temporary traffic management sees a combination of shoulder closures and stop/go as required. This may cause minor traffic delays. More information.
For up to 48 hours following completion of chipseal sites, a 50km/h temporary speed limit will be in place until the road is swept and line marking reinstated.
The above information is accurate at the time of release. Many of the above works are dependent on a number of factors, particularly weather, and may be postponed at short notice. For up-to-date information on road works, traffic, detours and delays, motorists are encouraged to visit the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website (journeys.nzta.govt.nz).
Waka Kotahi thanks motorists for their patience while we complete this essential work to keep the state highway network safe, accessible and resilient.
