$44,000 funding available for Rotorua arts initiatives
A recent project supported by CCS was the alternative pottery firing, led by local potters Sarah Ziessen and Pauline Sainsbury. Three pottery workshops were held where participants learned to make three different objects in a variety of clays, concluded with an exciting day where the objects were finished in a teepee firing.
The budding potters used sawdust, horsehair, copper wire and seaweed as well as some of the more usual chemicals to influence the end colour of their pots. The day was then spent building the teepee kiln out of branches and slip covered sheets and newspapers, setting it alight and waiting for everything to cool before they could retrieve their treasures from the ashes.
The Creative Communities Scheme (CCS) provides funding to local arts projects so that all New Zealanders can be involved in, support or attend a wide range of events including dance, literature, Māori arts, crafts, film, music, Pacific arts, theatre and visual arts.
“It is a real opportunity for creatives to make a difference in the lives of Rotorua people by helping them to participate in the arts”, says Mrs Parsons.
Applications must be for arts projects that have not yet started (must start after 1 November 2022) and that will be completed by 31 October 2023. Mrs Parsons advises applicants to apply early in their project planning phase as later applications may see some stages of the project ineligible for funding. Previous applicants are welcome to apply, but will only be considered if their end-of-project accountability reports have been received.
Applications can be completed online or downloaded from rotorualakescouncil.nz/creativecommunities and completed applications should be emailed to Julie.parsons@rotorualc.nz by 26 September 2022, or posted to Julie Parsons at Rotorua Lakes Council, Private Bag 3029, Rotorua, 3046.
