Weather update
UPDATE: 10am, 31 May 2022
Crews out and about today dealing with the following:
- Lakes area completing inspections following the heavy rain.
- Southern area completing inspections following the heavy rain.
- Two crews in urban area clearing grates and checking flooding sites for debris from yesterday. These crews are working on the SH manhole replacement first.
- Crew clearing slips and other debris on Paradise Valley & Valley Rd’s.
- Crew clearing the slip on Mountain Rd and Corbett Rd.
- Mountain Rd - slip covering one lane. Crew on site this morning to clean up.
- Paradise Valley Rd – Rocks on the road. Crew made safe last night. Crew will head to clean up after Mountain Rd
- SH5/Kea St – Manhole lid broken and flipped over. Not storm related. Crew on site now to close a lane off and replace the lid.

UPDATE: 6pm, 30 May 2022
All roads in the district are now open. However, there is a lot of debris and patches of surface flooding all over the place, both urban and rural. So motorists need to be extremely careful if travelling overnight as there is still at least another 8 – 10mm of rain still forecast between now and 10pm tonight.

People are being urged to travel on our roads only if necessary given the current rainfall with trees down and surface flooding being reported in various parts of the Rotorua district.
The number of weather-related calls to Rotorua Lakes Council and its contractors has increased in the past hour or so after a reasonably quiet morning.
The MetService is showing that 64mm of rain fell in Rotorua to about 2.20pm today with another approximately 20mm expected between now and 7pm.
Crews are, or have been, dealing with the following:
- Corner Clayton Rd / Steeles Lane – car hit power pole. Crews attended to provide traffic management until Unison got to site.
- Dansey Rd – Tree down (crews heading to site).
- Gem St – manhole blow back.
- Homedale Street (contractors sent to help fire service close street)
- Nihoriki St – Tree down (crew on site).
- Paradise Valley - fallen tree
- Tarawera Road near Longmile Rd – Tree down blocking the whole road
- Tumunui Rd – Tree down (now cleared).
- Tumunui Rd – Small slip approx. 7-8km from Corbett Rd end
- Crews are reporting several urban streams are right up at road level and very close to overtopping bridges.
Wastewater:
- Wastewater overflows from manhole/s at corner of Victoria & Ranolf Streets, and in the Depot Street area.
- Wastewater overflow at Wastewater Treatment Plant
These overflows are due to an overwhelming amount of stormwater entering the system in a short space of time - contractors are attending - people should treat surface water in these areas as if potentially contaminated.
