Topic: Budokan Opening
Inquiry
I'm working on an article about the new martial arts gym in Rotorua - Budokan. I've just been to have a look around and it looks fantastic!
I understand it is a council building and was wondering if there was someone I could call this afternoon for a quick interview about why council chose to support the project, what they think of the finished establishment and the benefits this brings to the community.
Response
The reporter was referred to Councillor Sturt as the lead for the Sport and Recreation project. Councillors Sturt was also part of the official opening of the Budokan centre last week.

Topic: Dog registrations and animal control information
Inquiry
I am just hoping to do a bit of a 'dog wrap up.'
So I was hoping to get some figures now that dog registrations have closed.
- How many dogs are registered in the Rotorua District?
- What are the most common breeds?
- What are the most common dog names?
- How many dog attacks have there been over the last year, broken down by month?
- How many wandering dogs have been picked up by animal control?
- Of those, how many were and weren't registered?
- Which suburbs have the highest number of dog attacks?
- Which suburbs have the highest number of wandering dogs?
- How many attacks were against people?
- How many attacks were against other animals?
Response
There are 11,843 known dogs in Rotorua ('known' because they have been registered at some point). It's not possible to provide figures for unregistered dogs because there will be dogs Council is unaware of, so we can only go on how many dogs we know about.
As of today [18 August 2017], 10,122 of known dogs have been re-registered (registrations were due end of July) and staff will be going door to door to follow up the rest. It's expected that will take several months. Those who are visited and still have dogs to register will be given time to do so. Infringement notices and/or dog seizure is a last resort.
See below re attacks by dogs:

Sept | 3 | 9 |
Oct | 3 | 15 |

Jan 2017 | 4 | 21 |
Feb | 10 | 10 |
March | 6 | 14 |
April | 8 | 9 |

June | 11 | 16 |
July | 8 | 15 |
TOTAL | 75 | 141 |
In the year from August 2016 to the end of July 2017 Animal Control picked up 764 wandering dogs.
Anecdotally (because it isn't recorded by suburb) the Western Heights, Pukehangi and Fordlands areas would have the highest incidences of dog attacks and wandering dogs.
The most popular dog breeds in Rotorua are: Labrador, Fox Terrier, Border collie, Huntaway and Greyhound (note these are shown as predominant breed so many will be crosses).
The most popular dog names in Rotorua are: Bella, Max, Poppy, Jess and Molly.
