Council observing Te Wiki o te Reo Maori
27 July 2015
Rotorua Museum and Rotorua Library have a number of initiatives in place for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) this week.
Museum front of house reception and caf staff will greet visitors in Te Reo Māori, staff will perform waiata in the Museum foyer each day, guides will incorporate more Māori kupu in their tours, and a small kupu (words) card with a selection of Māori words commonly used in the Museum available for staff, guides and visitors.
The library will also launch a week of activities to celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. Groups of children from three local kura kaupapa will visit the library for story-telling sessions throughout the week. At 4pm on Friday, a prize giving ceremony for the winners of a Matariki poster competition will be held, followed by the launch of a ground-breaking publishing project Tahuhu o Te Pakiwaitara (The Ministry of Fairytales) which aims, over the next ten years, to create a range of books in te reo that celebrate local stories and history for school age children.
