Celebrate 75 - community concert celebrates city theatre
13 July 2015
Rotorua raises the curtain on a special community concert on Friday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the city's Civic Theatre.
A great line-up of local talent will make for a fun and entertaining evening, a nostalgic presentation of Rotorua performing arts, befitting such a significant venue in the district's history.
Opened in July 1940 and originally known as the Regent Theatre, the Civic Theatre is part of the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre. Following major redevelopments, the theatre now features state-of-the-art facilities.
The Civic holds a special place in the hearts of many Rotorua people, having hosted the development of some of our own homegrown talent as well as international stars like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and of course, Sir Howard Morrison.
This Friday, 17 July, Rotorua Lakes Council hosts a special variety concert to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Civic Theatre, featuring an array of local performers showcasing song and dance through the decades.
Rotorua singer Lizzie Marvelly and well known local Reverend Tom Poata will MC the concert which will feature Sir Howard Morrison Jnr, Rewa Ututaonga, Vicki Le Fleming Whitmore Academy of Dancing, Ellis Carrington, The Edward Brothers, Thermaleles, Sulphur City Square Dance Club, BellyVegas, AMJAZZ, Breakthrew Dance Academy, Anne Samson School of Ballet, Dance 2 Inspire, Dance Factory NZ and Cook Island dancers and band.
