Students’ art installation for inner city
Waiariki Institute of Technology Horticulture students' creation in City Focus
A new public art installation at City Focus' (corner Tutanekai and Hinemoa streets) promises to deliver a beautiful changing landscape to the area over winter.
A Cool Approach' is Waiariki Institute of Technology's Level 4 Certificate Horticulture students' second public art installation in the inner city.
The design was based on the students' studies in Landscape Design, Science of Plant Growth, and Sustainability, using locally sourced materials.
Challenges included selecting plants that offered winter colour, creating an installation that would encourage public interaction, and keeping in line with Rotorua's new Wood First Policy.
Having agreed to a single design, the students grew over 300 poppies, pansies and kale, and coordinated with the institute's Forestry and Agriculture departments to assist with chainsawing and wiring, while maintaining their studies.
A Cool Approach' will remain at City Focus for around two months when it will be replaced with a spring installation designed by the students.
Call by City Focus and enjoy A Cool Approach' and its changing winter progression.
