Free internet for library customers
6 December 2014
Free internet access has arrived for customers of the Rotorua Library.
In conjunction with Aotearoa People's Network Kaharoa, the library lift the lid on its free internet access package last week with the service already proving a hit with customers.
The system is run on a computerised reservation system allowing library customers to book a 30 minute slot at any one of the 20 brand new computers without charge. The computers are spread throughout the ground, first and second floors with a central booking station computer on the ground floor.
All library visitors can also utilise free wi-fi throughout the library to operate their own devices.
Library director Jane Gilbert said the new major development for the library and community brings a whole new dimension to its services.
This service will help level the playing field when it comes to our community's access to technology. Statistics tell us that the number of Rotorua residents with internet access is lower than the national average so this development will really benefit our community.
Mrs Gilbert also noted that the change has already begun bringing a wider clientele to the library as visitors to Rotorua take the opportunity to use the facility.
"Customers from all walks of life are embracing the change with the computer usage remaining consistently high since the service has been in operation.
There will be plenty of staff on hand to assist customers so as many people as possible will be able to make the most of this exciting new era.
The Aotearoa People's Network Kaharoa is an initiative of National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga O Aotearoa which provides free access to broadband internet services from public libraries so that everyone can benefit from accessing, experiencing and creating digital content.
