Fenton and Haupapa Street intersection upgrade
22 November 2014
Work is progressing well on the upgrade of the Fenton and Haupapa Street intersection. The project includes an extension of the median strip along Fenton Street, and has already eliminated right hand turns on what has long been a problem inner city intersection for some time.
Kerbing on the main centre island on Fenton Street was completed this week and the cement will cure' (harden) over the next few days.
New wider cobblestone crossing areas for pedestrians is being installed on Fenton Street, with a wider, flattened refuge area more suitable for mobility vehicles and pushchairs. This will make crossing the busy four-lane road safer for pedestrians and disabled persons.
Weather permitting, on Monday or Tuesday next week topsoil and compost will be brought in to fill the new central island garden, with plantings to follow when work is complete.
Later next week work is expected to commence on changing the entrance and exit from Fenton Street into the Haupapa Street parking area in front of the council Civic Centre and alongside the RSA and Police buildings. Following that work, changes will be made on the other side of Fenton street to allow only left turns in and out of Haupapa Street, onto Fenton.
The council is reminding motorists to exercise care and urging patience as traffic is reduced to one lane at various times. To allow contractors to undertake the upgrade work.
