Poll remains option for Maori wards
18 November 2014
Rotorua District Council has decided to retain the status quo for its representation structure for the next local government election in 2016. This means that separate Maori wards are not planned to be part of the future political arrangement for the council at this stage.
However there is an opportunity for residents to seek to have that decision changed by demanding a poll on the matter. The outcome of a poll would be binding on the council.
The Local Electoral Act 2011 (sections 19ZB to 19ZC) provides an opportunity for a poll to be carried out on the introduction of Maori wards. If the poll was successful, changes would come into effect from the next election.
This requires a request to be made in writing and signed by at least 5 per cent of all eligible electors in the district. It also needs must include the full name and address of each person signing.
A completed request for a poll on Maori wards needs be lodged with Rotorua District Council by 28 February 2015.
