Christmas lights, new tents creating festive Night Market
13 November 2014
The introduction of brand new blue tents for stallholders at tonight's (13 November) Rotorua Night Market coincides with the launch of the city's festive Light Rotorua event and late night shopping.
Fairy lighting displays on nine major trees around the inner city will be switched on by Rotorua Trust chairman Grahame Hall and Mayor Steve Chadwick at an official opening at City Focus at 7pm, creating a glowing trail for the community to enjoy.
There will be entertainment and carol singing, and everyone is welcome to join the celebrations.
Rotorua Night Market manager, Brigitte Nelson, said the night market has proved successful beyond expectations and its contribution to the revitalisation of the inner city, one the key goals of the Rotorua 2030 vision, has been phenomenal.
The night market is self-sustainable and has continued to evolve, with exciting new projects developing around it, such as tonight's Light Rotorua campaign.
Mrs Nelson said she was rapt that all 24 of the market's stallholder tents have been upgraded with bright new navy blue tents, which Unison had made a sizeable contribution to.
Our old white tents have been very effective and created a pleasant aesthetic to the night market since its establishment four years ago, however it's now time to upgrade the overall look and feel of the market.
The beautiful new navy blue tents will add to the ambience of the Rotorua Night Market. Combined with the Light Rotorua event, evening shopping in the inner city has never looked so appealing.
With Christmas fast approaching and late night shopping on Thursdays also commencing tonight, the latest developments tie in nicely with the festive atmosphere we're keen to create.
Forty trees will be located around the inner city for retailers to decorate and to brighten the streetscape. A shop window display competition in conjunction with late night shopping is also taking place.
The turret at Rotorua District Council's Civic Centre, the Rotorua Museum, Seddon Memorial Clock Tower, City Focus and the Prince's Gate arches will be lit with green lights to celebrate Christmas, while planter boxes on Tutanekai Street have been replanted with red and green maples.
