Have your say on rules for rural land use
16 July 2014
Bay of Plenty Regional Council has developed draft rules aimed at reducing nitrogen losses from rural land within the Lake Rotorua groundwater catchment, as part of the Rotorua Te Arawa Lakes Programme.
The Lakes Programme is a partnership of Rotorua District Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Te Arawa Lakes Trust.
Landowners, iwi and the general community are invited to provide input to the rules.
The draft rules set out how Nitrogen Discharge Allowances will be allocated to individual rural properties using a mix of resource consents and permitted activities. The rules are likely to affect all properties over 2 hectares in the Lake Rotorua ground water catchment.
Landowners will have until 2032 to meet limits that will be set for each property.
Support and advice will be available to landowners:
- to understand how they are affected by the rules
- advice to help reach their nitrogen limits.
Industry initiatives are also being developed to support their members.
