Graduation for young emergency services volunteers
8 May 2014
Mayor Steve Chadwick, in association with Lake Okareka Volunteer Rural Fire Force, is hosting the Youth in Emergency Services (YES) Graduation 2014 today at Rotorua District Council's Civic Centre.
YES is a national programme run collaboratively with the Ministry of Youth Development and Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management.
The graduation is being held in the Council Chamber from 3.30pm to 5pm.
Over the course of a month, the young people spent time with local emergency services, learning basic skills and getting a sense of what it would be like to volunteer with the service.
The four week orientation experience culminated in a weekend camp which involved all the services running scenario based exercises. At the end of this orientation, young people nominated the service they would like to volunteer with and attended regular training with these services.
