Health warnings lifted for Lake Rotoehu and Lake Rotoiti
2 May 2014
Algal bloom health warnings previously issued for Lake Rotoehu and for Okawa Bay and Okere Arm on Lake Rotoiti have been lifted. Medical Officer of Health, Dr Neil de Wet said results of water testing confirmed that the algal blooms have subsided in both lakes.
However despite the lifting of the warning Dr de Wet advises that the public should always be vigilant for signs of algal blooms if using lakes.
Algal blooms can develop rapidly and unpredictably and can sometimes produce toxins. If water looks discoloured, has an unusual smell, or has green or brown particles suspended in it then it is best to avoid contact with it.
