‘Swim The Lakes’ to boost city’s profile
Swim The Lakes' to boost city's profile
24 January 2014
A new swim series in Rotorua this summer will showcase the region's superb lakes and encourage more people to give swimming a go.
The Famously Rotorua Swim The Lakes Summer Series will be held over January, February and March on three of the region's most stunning lakes - Tikitapu (Blue), Rotoma and Okataina.
Event manager Martin Croft says this is the first time all three swim events have been brought together under one umbrella. They offer a range of achievable distances that will challenge everyone from first timers through to experienced swimmers.
These lakes are renowned for their beauty. They're flat and the Blue Lake, in particular, is surrounded by hills so it's protected from the wind.
Rotoma is similar - the lake is pristine and the water is crystal clear. You don't have any current so you don't have to swim against the tide. There are many advantages to swimming in these lakes rather than the ocean.
Croft says those who compete in all three swim events will have their achievement recognised by receiving a Famously Rotorua Swim the Lakes t-shirt.
Our aim is to promote fitness and fun through swimming. You don't have to be an elite athlete to take part - these swims are ideal for people who have watched open water swimming before and thought I'd really like to give that a go'.
The first swim in the series is part of the Blue Lake Multisport Festival next weekend on 25th & 26th January. There are two distances to choose from - 750m or 2km - and there are both cash and merit prizes up for grabs for the top three males and females in each race.
The second swim will take place on Waitangi Day (6th February) - the Lake Rotoma Kiwanis Open Water Swim. There's an impressive 20 entry options with distances ranging from 100m to 15km. The triangular course is marked out by buoys, and swimmers will wear colour-coded caps so several races can be run at the same time.
This popular annual event has been running for over 30 years and the first place getters in each race receive a medal, with both wetsuit and non-wetsuit categories available.
The final swim in the 2014 series is the Swim Rotorua Open Water Swim on sparkling Lake Okataina on 16th March. With 800m, 1500m or 3000m distances to choose from, this promises to be a special family-friendly event. There are prizes for the male and female winner of each race, and spot prizes up for grabs as well.
Whether you're training for a multisport event or wanting to improve your general fitness, this summer series is a great way to make the most of Rotorua's beautiful lakes and challenge yourself to try something new, says Croft.
