Public meetings on land-use rules for Lake Rotorua catchment
15 October 2013
The public is invited to attend meetings to hear the latest update on development of rules and incentives for the Lake Rotorua catchment.
Significant nitrogen reductions are needed from the pastoral sector to reach the sustainable nitrogen load for Lake Rotorua. The Lake Rotorua Stakeholder Advisory Group (Rotorua Te Arawa Lakes Programme) is working with the regional council to develop rules and incentives that provide for sustainable improvements in water quality and a viable rural sector.
Recent decisions have outlined the approach to be used to allocate the sustainable nitrogen limit.
An integrated programme of nitrogen discharge allowances, incentives and gorse conversion will achieve the catchment's required nutrient reductions. This approach shares the risk, responsibility and cost of achieving the sustainable nitrogen limit set for Lake Rotorua between farmers and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.
It is essential that all rural landowners in the Lake Rotorua catchment are kept informed.
To learn more about the rules development, rural landowner are invited to attend one of our information evenings:
