Karl Chitham talks Turkington
James Turkington
Rotorua Museum art curator, Karl Chitham, explores the career of one of the country's most prolific mural artists, James Turkington, during a free talk at the museum on Wednesday (18 September) at 12pm.
Mr Chitham will profile Turkington's significant career and discuss rarely seen material from Rotorua Museum's collection. He will also reveal the person behind the art, a man that was intensely generous and hardworking who held a special place in his heart for family, education and horses.
Surface Treatments - The Art of James Turkington on display at Rotorua Museum until 17 November tracks some of the key moments in Turkington's career - from his humble start as a budding artist on the World War One battlefields to his rapid rise as the go to' muralist throughout the 1950s and 60s.
His work spanned all arenas of the New Zealand social sector from private commissions in the homes of prominent individuals and commercial clients to large public murals in schools, swimming pools and memorials throughout the country.
Mr Chitman will host another talk on Thursday 7 November at 5.30pm.
