Tagging topic of tonight's speech competition
27 August 2013
Rotorua District Council is hosting its annual Keep Rotorua Beautiful speech competition this evening.
Nine Year 7 and 8 students from local intermediate schools are participating in the competition in the Council Chamber from 7pm.
This year's topic is The Effect of Tagging on Our Community'.
RDC Keep Rotorua Beautiful coordinator, Rose Hiha-Agnew, said the awards are an ideal opportunity for local children to get involved in the city's beautification from a young age.
The topic is relevant because there's been an increase of tagging in the district at the moment. Hopefully these students' speeches will bring awareness to their peers so they can take ownership of their surroundings and report any taggers to their teachers or an adult.
The competition is also an opportunity for youth to present in a formal setting, which can lead on to great careers in the public sector.
The winner of the Keep Rotorua Beautiful speech competition will be awarded a trophy and $200, second place will receive $150, and third $100, while the winning school will receive a trophy and $200 book voucher.
