Council to decide on vacancy tonight
1 August 2013
At tonight's Rotorua District Council meeting (1 August) the mayor and councillors will be making a decision on the vacancy on Council which occurred following the sad passing of long-serving councillor Maureen Waaka, earlier this month.
Under the Local Electoral Act 2001 the council must decide whether to appoint someone to take up the vacant seat or for it to remain vacant until the local authority election in October.
Holding a by-election is not an option under legislation as the vacancy has occurred within 12 months of the election.
The Council meeting is at Rotorua District Council Civic Centre tonight (1 August) at 7pm.
