‘Canterbury Quakes’ opening at Rotorua Museum
Canterbury Quakes' opening at Rotorua Museum
20 June 2013
At 4:35 am on Saturday 4 September 2010, the Canterbury region was shaken awake by several large earthquakes, and many subsequent aftershocks. These earthquakes have already been acknowledged as some of the most significant in New Zealand's history.
On display at Rotorua Museum from Saturday (22 June), Canterbury Quakes' remembers these events, with a particular focus on the science of earthquakes, the human side of the disaster and the recovery, with a strong emphasis on looking forward to the future.
Visitors will gain an insight into the awesome power of Mother Nature, and what lies beneath the Canterbury Plains. They will hear emotional stories from emergency service workers and learn about the resilience of Canterbury communities following the devastating 22 February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch in which 185 people lost their lives.
Developed and toured by Canterbury Museum in conjunction with Hewlett-Packard, this emotive exhibition will be on show from 22 June until 8 September 2013.
