Diverse exhibitions at museum this winter
Rueben Paterson. Whaakapapa - Get down upon your knees. 2009.
Rotorua Museum's diverse winter season offers an exciting mix of in-house shows and touring exhibitions.
One that is sure to attract audiences of all ages is Arcade - Homegrown Video Games. Arcade celebrates the extraordinary skills and creativity of New Zealand video game designers in this interactive exhibition, which offers 12 amazing games for visitors to play.
Arcade is developed and toured by The Dowse Art+Museum.
Inspiration from popular culture is also an integral part of KABLAM! Kereama Taepa. Local artist Kereama Taepa has combined kōwhaiwahi (painted scroll designs) with modern day motifs like smiley faces, guns and cell phones.
Taepa uses this imagery to show the impact of American street culture on youth and the increasing urbanisation of Māori communities. This large scale graphic installation stretches across three walls of the gallery.
Flow Riders - Tracing Kōwhaiwhai Traditions looks at the changing ways kōwhaiwhai have been used to tell stories of iwi, hapu and whānau. The exhibition explores these changes through examples of customary Te Arawa heke (rafters) in the care of Rotorua Museum, alongside works by some of Aotearoa's most exciting contemporary artists like Reuben Paterson, Peata Larkin, Darryn George and Kylie Tiuka.
