Rotorua Museum is launching visitors on a bold journey into the world of contemporary New Zealand art with yesterday's opening of the 'Autumn Season of Art' [20 February].
Museum art curator Karl Chitham said the five new exhibitions will be thought-provoking and offer a fresh take on our culture and the things we use and see every day.
Rotorua artist Eddie Clemens is well known for his quirky take on the daily grind', and his exhibition 'Ask the Dust' features sculptures that add a clever and surprising twist to everyday objects, such as office chairs, brooms and even the humble tyre swan'.
Contemporary artist Joanna Langford, known for her large-scale art installations made from every day and recycled items, has installed her latest creation The Lightness. Specially designed with a Rotorua theme, this artwork shows Langford's attention to detail and unique use of materials.
Another artist with Rotorua connections, Joe Sheehan, takes a fresh look at stone carving and the ordinary items around us in his exhibition 'Other Stories'. These exquisite pieces, including a working light bulb carved from greenstone, challenge us to think about pounamu and other stone in a whole new way.
Through her series of beautiful lithographs and etchings, artist Marian Maguire creates new stories by combining New Zealand history with Ancient Greek myths and legends in the exhibition 'Titokowaru's Dilemma'.
Rotorua Museum deputy director Pamela Lovis said following the great success over summer with the WOW exhibition, this new range of exhibitions and related events promise to interest and excite a wide range of audiences.
