Rotorua District Youth Council for 2013 selected
11 January 2013
Sixteen young people from seven local schools have been selected to serve on the 2013 Rotorua District Youth Council (RDYC). They will be supported by former youth councillors as they begin their year's journey.
Rotorua District Council youth projects officer Jill Campbell said youth councillors from 2012 and 2011 are getting onboard to help the 2013 team.
We're all looking forward to working with the new councillors. Our previous youth councillors are organising an event where our new recruits will learn about local government and look at volunteering options in the community.
They're utilising the leadership skills that they learnt during their terms to help train and mentor their peers. I think it's great because it means that it's a programme developed by young people for young people, and council is there to support them.
The RDYC will begin its year with a comprehensive training weekend from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 February.
The 2013 Rotorua District Youth Council is:
Reade Nikora, Stephen Wright, Ashley Hilson, Jenny Kim (all Western Heights High School); Kelsey Rose-Whiston, Joedie Alley, Max Lawson (Rotorua Lakes High School); Conor Sutherland, Bianca Cox-Hohapata (John Paul College); Koro Tuakanakare, Daniel Teautama (Rotorua Boys' High School); Sharni Taiepa, Chantelle Cobby (Rotorua Girls' High); Caroline Winters, Kerry Power (Reporoa College) and Ngaire Fell (Rotorua School for Young Parents).
