Enquiry
I'm writing a preview story on Crankworx 2024 returning to Rotorua for its 10th year this March. Could you please answer the following questions or provide a comment?
- How much revenue does RLC expect the Crankworx event to bring to the Rotorua community in 2024? Including the tourism, hospitality, retail, and accommodation sectors?
- In 2023 RLC was a 49 percent shareholder in the Crankworx event. Will this remain the same in 2024?
- How is an event such as Crankworx beneficial to the Rotorua community?
- Any additional information about the event people need to know?
Response
We referred the reporter to the event organisers Mountain Bike Events Ltd for information and details about the event, including expected economic benefit and referred her to RotoruaNZ as the CCO responsible for destination marketing and economic development for further insights and commentary relating to the economic benefits of this major event.
We confirmed there was no change in 2024 to RLC’s 49% shareholding in Mountain Bike Events Ltd, the company which holds the licence for the Rotorua event.
We also provided the following, information, suggesting she might want to first watch the recording of Rotorua Mountain Bike Limited’s most recent update to elected members, which was provided at the Council meeting of 13 December 2023. The following is from RLC’s website with links to this part of the December meeting and a link to the presentation slides.
Crankworx presentation
Rotorua Mountain Bike Limited, in which Rotorua Lakes Council is a shareholder, presented on how the Crankworx event for 2024 is tracking with CE Ariki Tibble presenting.
The Rotorua event celebrates its tenth year next year and Mr Tibble outlined a number of new and expanded events planned as part of Crankworx Rotorua 2024.
The event objectives, set in 2014, remain the same today, Mr Tibble explained – economic impact, destination marketing, community engagement and capability building, and putting on an event locals are proud of and visitors also love.
Crankworx has injected $34.5m into the local economy over nine years, Council heard.
