Topic: Hemo sculpture repairs
Enquiry
I understand there are some painters working on the Hemo sculpture and wondered if someone can please answer a few questions for me. It looks like there is some paint chipped off and parts broken being replaced.
- How was the sculpture damaged? When?
- What is the sculpture's regular maintenance?
- Aside from regular maintenance how often has the sculpture been painted or repaired?
- What has the total cost of maintenance, including unscheduled, been since installation?
- Who is doing the repairs?
- Have there been more issues with the paint used?
Response
From Council’s Arts, Culture & Mahi Toi Manager, Stewart Brown:
Damage to Te Ahi Tupua was first noticed in January with repairs scheduled for March. It’s thought that someone has attempted to climb the sculpture which has resulted in damage to a couple of the chevron patterns. These have needed to be replaced and paint touched up.
Our team is currently replacing signage warning against climbing on Te Ahi Tupua and considering additional ways to protect the sculpture from vandalism in future.
As this damage is not covered under warranty, Kilwell is completing the repairs and council will cover the cost which has been quoted at $4,000.
Not including this recent damage, since installation, repairs for vandalism and damage have cost $7,172. Additionally the annual maintenance wash down costs around $2,040.
