News
Here’s some important information:
- The ground is saturated, slips are still likely and damage to our roads remain possible
- ALL Council Sports Fields are closed for the remainder of the day
- If you come across teams working to clean up damage and slips, please be patient
- Don’t go swimming for at least 72 hours - floodwaters bring with them a risk of contamination. Toi Te Ora Public Health has advised that a temporary red warning is in place for all sites in the Bay of Plenty – you can keep up to date with swimming water conditions at www.lawa.org.nz
- Drive to the conditions
- Until the rail link between Kawerau and the Port of Tauranga can be repaired, there will be more heavy traffic on the roads.
- If you come across damage or slips, report them - call Council on 07 348 4199 (24/7)
Road closures
- Otaramarae Rd - Road has been reduced to one lane near the boat ramp. Surface runoff from adjacent paddocks has gone under the seal layer resulting in aggregate being scoured away and silt building up under the seal causing the seal layer to go soft and slump with mud/silt oozing out in places.
- Manawahe Rd – Due to storm damage Manawahe Road is closed between Pongakawa Valley Road and Hamilton Road until further notice.”
- Te Kopia Rd – Remains closed due to significant scouring, blocked culverts and slips. Crews continued filling scours, grading and rolling, clearing culverts and cutouts and are also trying to fully clear the blocked culvert which caused the large road scour.
- Dods Rd – Large underslip has washed out a section of road - the road is open to local residents only. Repairs will start when weather permits, but crews are adding geogrid and metal to the temp access road today - this will be reassessed again on Tuesday.
Track closure
- The track that runs from the eastern end of the Lakefront development area to Motutara Point is closed due to damage and washouts which have made it unsafe to use at this time. Please adhere to barriers and signs that will be going up today. The new Lakefront Boardwalk is still open for use.
