Funding paves way for improved transport options

Rotorua Lakes Council is on track to receive more than $2m from a $350m Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, Transport Choices package, subject to scoping for proposed projects that will show they provide more sustainable transport options.
The Transport Choices package aims to demonstrate what’s possible for communities across Aotearoa New Zealand, by quickly providing more transport options, and making it easier to travel in ways that are good for all of us and support our environment.
Rotorua Lakes Council Infrastructure and Environmental Solutions Deputy Chief Executive, Stavros Michael says Council has been successful in gaining indicative funding as part of a two-stage process, the first stage being subject to Waka Kotahi further refining and scoping the submitted project proposals. Construction would begin in stage two.
Addressing climate change is one of the five key priorities in our current Long-term Plan and our goal is to help move Rotorua to a low carbon economy and work towards becoming a resilient community that can adapt to changes in climate.
“To help achieve our emissions targets, a priority in our transport plan is the improvement and growth of our urban shared path and cycling networks, to deliver strategic cycling options and safe walkable neighbourhoods for the district.
“This funding allows us work with Waka Kotahi to refine our original project proposal which aims to increase the pace of our shared path network extension, as well as installing and improving the safety and usability of key zebra crossings to enhance walkability in urban areas.”
Waka Kotahi Manager Urban Mobility, Kathryn King says the Transport Choices programme is supporting councils to give people more options in the way they travel.
“I’m pleased to say we received an outstanding response from councils around the country, embracing the opportunity to provide greater transport choices for their communities.
“Funding criteria specified projects that would deliver strategic cycling/micro mobility networks; create walkable neighbourhoods; support healthy school travel; or make public transport easier to use.
“The aim is to open up streets so everyone can get where they need to go in ways that are good for their health and the planet.”
Mr Michael says transport is a major source of emissions in our district and to create healthier, safer and more equitable environments people need to have access to safe and convenient travel options if they are to change how they move around.
“Completing shared path networks will further improve the attractiveness of walking and cycling, encourage greater uptake of these active modes with the potential to contribute to a wider range of health, safety and environmental benefits.
“Council’s commitment to investment in the Strategic Cycle Network has continued, and is bolstered by further funding from Crown Infrastructure Partners (CIP).”
Transport Choices funding is currently indicative until Waka Kotahi works with Councils to explore how projects can be progressed in line with Transport Choices timeframes. Funding allocations may be adjusted after this consultation.
