From the meeting - Council decisions
24 November 2022
In today’s meeting the Council appointed Cr Gregg Brown as the council representative to the Lakes Community Board and Cr Karen Barker as the council representative to the Rural Community Board.
Council also accepted and received a report from Rotorua Lakes Council District Development Deputy Chief Executives Jean-Paul Gaston and Anaru Pewhairangi on the Non-tourist accommodation regulatory approach.
The purpose of the presentation was to make Council aware of the organisation’s regulatory approach to Emergency Housing following instances where the owners of tourist accommodation such as motels have potentially changed the use of the building without correct authorisation and where the use contravenes the District Plan.
Any such use of the land and/or buildings including for housing, emergency housing, transitional housing or community housing, is only lawful if first authorised by the grant of a resource consent under the Resource Management Act.
Mr Gaston told Lakes Council Councillors, the new regulatory approach presented would see a staged reduction of existing motels being used for Emergency Housing. This means that motels owner/operators looking to move from tourism accommodation to Emergency Housing would require a resource consent under the Resource Management Act.
