Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand is upgrading New Zealand veterans’ memorial plaques and berms in the services section of Rotorua’s the Sala Street cemetery in Rotorua.
Work will begin on 4 October 2021, and members of the public who have family members in the RSA section are being asked to remove all personal mementos before work commences (map of area below).
As part of the process, all of the existing plaques have been photographed and details are being checked and confirmed before any works are undertaken.
If for any reason a whānau member cannot collect mementos before the works start, these will be stored until either collected or placed when works are completed.
All plaques will be temporarily removed while new concrete berms are established, replacing all existing berms east of the flagpole.
Missing plaques will be replaced, granite plaques will be refurbished and metal plaques will be replaced with granite. All memorial plaques will be reinstated when the berm is installed.
Work will be carried out in sections and completed as quickly as possible. Access restrictions will be in place while work is underway.
The RSA bronze plaques age quicker from to the sulphur in the air, and maintenance of the service cemeteries is important to Veterans’ Affairs as their role is to ensure they honour our veterans’ and their service to New Zealand.
