Wastewater

Wastewater (or sewage) is water-borne waste which is liquid, with or without matter in solution or suspension, discharged into Council's sewerage system.

Wastewater Connection and Disconnection

Rotorua District Council has a wastewater connections and disconnection process that enables Council to manage the wastewater network.

Approved Contractors List

Council controls and maintains records for all wastewater connections to the sewer reticulation under its control. Only Council-approved contractors are permitted to make connections to the Public Sewer Reticulation System.

Wastewater Treatment

Rotorua's wastewater (sewage) is treated daily at a central Wastewater Treatment Plant on Te Ngae Rd, that uses a 5-stage Bardenpho process, the first full biological nitrogen and phosphorus process used for municipal wastewater in New Zealand. Depending on the weather, the sludge produced (biosolids) is composted on-site or landfilled while options for beneficial use' are being investigated.

Washing cars or equipment

it is illegal to wash any equipment or vehicle where the waste from your cleaning job flows, or is likely to flow, into storm water drains carrying dirty waste and discharging it into our freshwater streams and lakes.

Please do not allow polluted foamy wastewater to flow into storm water drains as this will discharge into streams and lakes.

Do wash your car or equipment at a proper wash facility connected to the council's sewerage system. This way any dirty, foamy polluted wastewater will be treated.

But if you can't get to a proper wash facility then wash your vehicle on a lawn where the ground can filter the wastes. Make sure there is no wastewater flowing into any storm water drain which could carry polluted waste into streams or lakes.

Use as little detergent as possible. Try using a bucket instead of hosing.

You could try trapping your wastewater in a pool and getting a licensed waste disposal contractor to take it away for proper disposal.
