Rotorua Lakes Council is rolling out a replacement programme for all public litter bins. The replacement programme is being done in two phases:
Phase one: reserve bins and key areas (Oct 2016 – Jun 2018)
Reserve Bins: Post-mounted 240 litre wheelie bins will replace reserve drums. Post mounts will ensure that bins remain in their designated locations, inhibit illegal dumping and deter animals. Council has worked with the Lakes Community Board and ratepayers associations on where the individual bins will be. Areas where there have been issues in the past, will get extra bins increasing capacity.
Key Areas: Council has worked with the Lakes Community Board and ratepayers associations to identify key areas within the district. The key areas identified include the lakesides of Lake Rotorua, Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake), Lake Okareka and Lake Tarawera. Façade-covered 240 litre wheelie bins will replace the bins currently there and will provide for the disposal of rubbish and recycling. The standardised bins will make collection simpler and safer and increase capacity.
Phase two: CBD bins and repurposed bins (July 2018 – June 2020)
CBD bins: Façade-covered 240 litre wheelie bins will replace existing bins in the inner-city and provide for the disposal of both rubbish and recycling.
Repurposed bins: Convenience shops and centres in outlying suburbs will get repurposed and reconditioned bins from the inner city.
Note: Phased bin replacement ensures that expenditure remains within allocated funding and provides an opportunity to recycle existing bins.
